Valley Forge Laboratories, Inc. (VFL) has successfully provided geotechnical engineering and materials testing services since 1967. VFL has a fully certified AASHTO Materials Reference Library (AMRL) for the testing of soils and aggregates. Our staff of geotechnical engineers and geologists has provided engineering consulting, design, field inspection, and laboratory testing services for a variety of clients, including private industry architects, consulting engineers, local governments, state and federal transportation agencies, attorneys, contractors, property managers, and home owners.

SUBSURFACE INVESTIGATIONS / TEST BORING SERVICES

VFL works with drilling contractors to investigate the subsurface conditions of projects ranging from residential additions to corporate centers to multi-lane highway and bridge projects. Our services include:

  • Test borings / rock coring
  • Inspection of test pits
  • Piezometer installation
  • Undisturbed sampling
  • Cone penetrometer testing
  • Analysis and report preparation

GEOTECHNICAL EVALUATION AND REMEDIATION SERVICES

VFL has investigated and developed practical, workable solutions for a variety of earthwork and foundation related problems, including:

  • Settlement cracks in structures
  • Ground settlement
  • Sinkhole remediation
  • Failure of earth slopes
  • Retaining wall movement
  • Flexible and rigid pavement distress

GEOTECHNICAL ANALYSIS AND DESIGN CAPABILITIES

VFL's geotechnical engineering staff utilizes sophisticated modeling techniques and computer-aided drafting to enhance our capabilities. The software and techniques currently used include:

  • DARWin 3.01 for pavement design
  • STABL for slope stability analysis
  • DRIVEN for pile capacity and downdrag
  • GRL WEAP for pile driveability
  • COM624P for pile lateral load capacity
  • ReSSA and RSS for reinforced slope design

SOIL IMPROVEMENT TECHNIQUES

VFL has been involved in a number of projects where existing subsurface conditions necessitated some type of soil improvement, including:

  • Excavation and replacement
  • Geogrid reinforcement
  • Dynamic deep compaction
  • Surcharge loading
  • Compaction grouting
  • Lime or cement stabilization

EARTH SLOPES AND RETAINING SYSTEMS

VFL personnel have analyzed the stability of earth slopes and retaining wall systems and have designed solutions for buildings, highways, and deep excavation projects including:

  • Geosynthetic reinforcment
  • Soil and rock anchors
  • Mechanically stabilized earth walls
  • Soil nailing

GEOTECHNICAL LABORATORY TESTING

VFL has a full service AMRL accredited laboratory for the testing of soil and aggregate materials. VFL is also among a handful of leading engineering firms and research institutions capable of performing resilient modulus testing of soils for pavement design in accordance with AASHTO T-307-99.

GEOTECHNICAL CONSTRUCTION MONITORING

Construction monitoring occupies a very important role in geotechnical engineering as it connects conceptual models and designs with real conditions and construction methods. Complete field testing services are offered by VFL in the following areas:

  • Footing subgrade verification
  • Pile static and dynamic load testing
  • Caisson verification testing
  • Plate static load testing
  • Pile Driving inspection
  • Compaction quality control

ENVIRONMENTAL AND GEOENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENTS

VFL has performed numerous Phase I environmental assessments for the private and public sectors. In performing such assessments, VFL has complied with the requirements of ASTM E1527, "Standard Practice for Phase I Environmental Assessments".
