Description:
VFL performed a geotechnical investigation for the replacement of the inbound and outbound passenger platforms. The study involved an evaluation of the load-carrying capacity of existing rectangular piers and an analysis of two platform options - timber and precast concrete. VFL also established design criteria for new augured pier foundation supports. Then, based on existing conditions and the load bearing strata, VFL established the optimum foundation system for the inbound and outbound platforms. The field study involved 8 test borings on a sloping surface.

VFL’s geotechnical site characterization was derived from 8 test borings on existing 2.5H:1V fill embankments. The borings revealed 5 to 14 feet of weak miscellaneous fill; several feet of soft silt and clay; and dense silty sand. Foundations were considered as end-bearing elements on the dense silty sand.
